TECHNOLOGY NEWS:
Microsoft’s ‘Vista Capable’ changes outraged HP:
*WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) was listed as a requirement of Vista, but a last stage decision mandated a downgrade of the program’s requirements to include Intel’s outdated 910 and 915 graphics chipsets*.
*The decision of course pleased Intel as it saved them billions of dollars in potential lost revenue – the non compliant Intel i915 chipset was being deployed in a huge number of laptops back then – and a shift of business to AMD and Nvidia. On the other hand, HP was enraged given the significant investments it had made to upgrade to newer PC graphics technology based upon Microsoft’s initially more demanding specs*.
*minimum chipset specifications for a PC to carry the ‘Vista Capable’ label in order to help Intel. Microsoft’s Jim Allchin, in charge of Vista’s development and delivery was also left outraged*.
TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

The company now has some 15,000 employees and plans to have the majority of them handling processor designs, while roughly 3,000 will head to newly-formed The Foundry Company early next year*.

Here is my simple bat file code:
@echo off
shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0
Which is converted into an executable using bat2exe converter.
The program works fine with nothing else running but has trouble with the media player I guess – though the error reported is on cmd.exe? I have tried using taskkill and tskill but neither are available in dos on this system. Is there any other way of remotely shutting down the programs? i.e another

See, the first time you
activated XP it created a file called “wpa.dbl” that lives in the
WINDOWS\system32 folder. By creating a backup of this file on disk, you can
simply put it back into the folder after reinstalling XP and avoid the whole
re-activation hassle. Here’s how…
Go to My Computer then
select your Hard Drive (usually drive C). Go to the WINDOWS\system32 folder and
scroll way down until you find the wpa.dbl file.
Right-click and choose
“Send To” then either Floppy Drive (make sure you have a disk in) or
CD-R/RW.
Now, when you reinstall
Windows XP you’ll come to the activation screen—decline to activate and let the
install finish.
Restart your computer in
Safe Mode (keep hitting F8 at start-up then when the Advanced Boot Options menu
appears arrow down to Safe Mode).
Find your way back to the
WINDOWS\system32 folder. It’s a good idea to rename the wpa.dbl file you’re
replacing just in case you run into problems, so call it something like
“wpa.nothing”.
Get the backup disk and
copy the old wpa.dbl file back to the WINDOWS\system32 folder and reboot.
There you go—XP is up and
running again.
P.S. Your wpa.dbl file
might NOT work on another computer.
